A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 4to., written by Pvt. James A. Hudson, Co. H, 1st New York (Lincoln) Cavalry, Martinsburg, Va., Jan. 23, 1863, to his cousin, in part: "…you are having exciting times at Albany…I hope this governor will soon show a little firmness and put an end to this rioting. If not Uncle Abe will have to take the matter in his own hands, put the state under martial law etc. Times appear to be growing worse & worse. The changes (Political) that another year will develop can hardly be conjectured. If the same honest motive actuated the rulers & our army officers that actuates the rank & file…all would soon be well. The prospects…look rather gloomy. Traitors [are] in our most loyal states are getting bold. The trial is becoming severe, but I have as yet no fear as to the result…shall I bring a Southern Damsel home with me…J. A. Hudson, Co. H, 1st N. Y. Cav., care of Capt. J. K. Stearns, Winchester, Va." VG
