A good pair of war-date Union soldier's letters, totaling 5 1/2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. James A. Hudson, Co. H, 1st New York (Lincoln) Cavalry. The first from Winchester, Va., Feb. 21, 1863, to his cousin, in part: "…the roads are again drying up fast…we have plenty of scouting to do…the Rebs are scarce & wild. I enclose a picture…it is a very correct likeness taken here in town. Pictures of that style & size cost $1…Jim [Potter, farrier] has bought a horse…a private horse receives 40 c. per day & ration…J. A. Hudson, Co. H, 1st N. Y. Cav., Winchester, Va." ... The second letter is from Berryville, Va., May 3, 1863, and reads, in part: "…we have had some pretty severe scouting to do lately…have the satisfaction of knowing that the Valley as fas as Woodstock is clear of the enemy, except one or 2 little guerrilla bands…the roads are in capital condition and the river must soon be fordable…I have just been relieved from picket…J. A. Hudson…Berryville, Shenandoah Valley, Va." Both VG. (2 letters)
