A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 2 1/2pp. 4to., written by Pvt. James A. Hudson, Co. H, 1st New York (Lincoln) Cavalry, Charlestown, (West) Virginia, Nov. 4, 1863, to his cousin, in part: "…we were all sorry to leave Martinsburg & its many pretty little maidens…we do pretty well with the rifle. The weapon we use to bring them down [squirrels] is the Burnside Carbine & never miss except when we take them on the run…as we cannot always take them in the head, shot would be better than ounce balls…J. A. Hudson & James Potter…8 p. m. send that photograph of Potter's here to you obit. servt. J. A. H. By order of Potter." VG
