This lot consists of a war-date CDV of Pvt. James Potter as farrier in Co. H,1st New York (Lincoln) Cavalry. Potter is mentioned extensively throughout Hudson's letters. This image is the one that was sent home in the above letter. It shows Potter standing wearing a twelve button shell jacket and with his arm on a chair. Identified in period ink "James Potter" on the bottom card and dated on the verso 1864, this image published by Fernando Deesaur, 8th Ave., New York City. Also included with this image is a war-date letter, 1p. oblong 4to., written by Pvt. James A. Hudson, Co. H, 1st New York (Lincoln) Cavalry, Martinsburg, Va., Aug. 28, 1863 sending home money, but more importantly for the image shows Potter as a member of the 1st New York. The letter, reads, in part: "…on receipt of this please write to James Potter, Cavalry Escort, Headquarters, Genl. French, 3rd Army Corps, Army of the Potomac & to me at Martinsburg, Va….1st N. Y. Cav…yours, J. A. Hudson." Condition of the CDV is VG while the letter is toned with small chip effecting left hand margin, else VG. (2 pieces)
