A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. James A. Hudson, Co. H, 1st New York (Lincoln) Cavalry, Charlestown, (West) Virginia, Jan. 17, 1864, to his cousin, in part: "…[Jubal] Early's Reb. division is in the Valley, about 7,000 strong…reenlisting goes on favorably. 3/4 or more of our Regt. have reenlisted…the No. will probably reach 4/5. I am not in yet and think it my duty to return home…the inducements, besides patriotism and a sense of duty, are $850 & a furlough for 35 days, both important items & when we add the probability that the war will not last more than 18 months…you see the case as it is here…besides all this, it will be no small satisfaction to see the thing through…Jas. A. Hudson…". Also included is a small slip by Hudson, reading, in part: "102 E. 25th St., [New York City], 5 P. M., Feb. 15, 1864. The Regt. has not yet arrived. I shall leave with the midnight train…I will write as soon as I get settled again in Dixie." Both VG. (2 pieces)
