Nice war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Rufus Robbins, [DOD, Philadelphia, January 7, 1863] Co. K, 7th Mass. Vols., "Camp Old Colony", Washington, D. C., July, 16, [1861], in part: "…we left Taunton enroll for Washington…went aboard the boat about 6 p. m…we passed in full view of Jersey City, Brooklyn and several beautiful islands. Had a pretty good view of New York until we arrived at the wharf…then such a forest of masts…prevented my seeing much more…arrived at Harrisburg Pa., about 3 o'clock Sunday…reached Baltimore…our company and Fall River men were ordered to load our guns just before we arrived at Bal. but we had no occasion to use them. It was very quiet…march throughout the city and took cars for Washington…slept in the Capitol…we are encamped within a quarter mile of Georgetown…saw the Potomac river…R. Robbins…7th Reg. Mass. V., Co. K, Capt Harlow…Rufus." The original stamped transmittal cover free franked by United States Congressman JAMES BUFFINGTON (1817-1875) from Massachusetts is also included. VG
