War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Rufus Robbins, [DOD, Philadelphia, January 7, 1863] Co. K, 7th Mass. Vols., Henrico Co., Va., May 28, 1862, in part: "…I have lost my knife which I brought from home or rather Henry Beebe [KIA Fredericksburg, Va., 5/3/63] lost it…he laid it down carelessly and some one picked it up…we are now 8 miles from Richmond. Have now got our toes about on the fighting line…the privates know but little of what is going on…the Rebel force is about 3 miles in front of us…since yesterday there was heavy firing on our right…which continued most of the day…the story has jeu come in…that Gen. Porter whipped 2 divisions, captured 1300 prisoners and a big gun…we have got a large force to bring against them. (Gen. Keyes has just brought the news which I have written above to Gen. Couch so it is true)…your truly, Rufus…". VG
