War-date Union soldier's battle letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Rufus Robbins, [DOD, Philadelphia, January 7, 1863] Co. K, 7th Mass. Vols., Fair Oaks, Va., June 8, 1862, in part: "…we are going to Richmond when McClellan says the word, Rebs or no Rebs. I don't know how determined resistance they will make…but I hope their troops have lost some confidence in their ability since the last battle. The attack was made Saturday noon…things were not quite as they should be. Casey…occupied the ground where the attack was made. He was asleep when one of his aides came to him and told him that the Rebels had assembled a large force in front of him and appeared to be marching…to come down upon him. His ans. was then we shall have to do the best we can…he had but few pickets out and…they had stacked their arms and were playing cards. All were expecting an attack but Casey…we should not have lost any ground…the Rebs occupied our camp that night but I don't know how much of the damage…is chargeable to them…my knapsack which I left snugly packed was opened and a part of my things carried off. I found my portfolio which you made for me with nothing in it. My knapsack was empty when I found it but I found my testament…and woolen blanket…I have heard the bullets whistle very near to my ears, but none of our Comp. have suffered by them yet. Your truly, Rufus." The original transmittal cover, endorsed by the 7th's Chaplain Robert Carver (DOD 3/2/63), is included. VG to near fine.
