War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Rufus Robbins, [DOD, Philadelphia, January 7, 1863] Co. K, 7th Mass. Vols., Camp near Yorktown, Va., Aug. 27, 1862, in part: "…I was at work yesterday on detail with 1/2 of our Comp. near Yorktown digging down breastworks thrown up by our men last May…there was a thousand or more men at work there…there is 3 or 4 miles of it to be dug down so that the enemy may not take the advantage of it…when they occupied Yorktown…we are divided into 3 reliefs each, working 1/2 an hour…that gave us one hour's rest to every 1/2 hour's work…Rufus".
