Union soldier’s letter written by “H(enry). Johnson, who was a Pennsylvania State Senator who also served as a private in Co. K, 14th Pa. Militia, 1862. The first letter, September 20, 1862, Camp Johnson, Hagerstown, 4pp, pencil, VG. In part, “.. I had been assigned to guard duty ... Jackson has escaped from McClellan & Crossed the Potomac ... we were all a great deal uneasy at the thought of such raw forces being opposed by Jackson’s veterans ... Some of the boys call this Camp Johnson in my honor. The battle today was near Sharpsburg & we obtained a complete victory ...” ...plus, a second letter, September 22, 1862, Camp Johnson, Hagerstown, 4pp, pencil, VG. In part, “Maryland is now clear of their army .. I would like to describe the battlefield ..surrounded by woods and full of dead horses ..we visited a hospital in a large white house owned by Mrs. Lyons. The house, barns, sheds, gardens, and all round was filled with wounded men, wounded in every way imaginable .. the dead had mostly been buried, yet there were quite a number of our men lying on the ground - ghostly looking creatures - all as black or blacker than the darkest negro I ever saw. The Rebs buried their dead in heaps & those which they left were interred by the Reb prisoners .. dead horses were being burned up all over ...”
