A great war-date wounded soldier's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. William Morris, 37th New York Vols., "State Hospital," New haven, CT, July 8, 1862 addressed to James Gordon Bennett (1795-1872) founder, publisher and editor of the New York Herald, in part: "Knowing you are friend of the wounded soldiers I take the liberty of addressing you in their behalf. What I would like to ask is it…part of the boasted humanity of this state to compel a wounded soldier to do guard duty & other duties such as waiting on tables, acting as nurses etc. The surgeon in charge of us…has discharged his hired help and compels us to do their work. I myself am wounded in the arm and the bone is fractured so I have to carry it in a sling. Still I am compelled to do guard duty at night. I…remonstrated at first so he shoved us into a dark, damp cellar called a guard house and kept…my wound has since mortified and I am in danger of losing my arm…is this the treatment we should receive after periling our lives in our Country's cause…if we had fallen into the hands of the Rebels we could not be used worse. Hoping you will publish this and befriend a wounded soldier. PS…you might want my name. I give it to you to make what use you like of it. William Morris, 37th Regt. N. Y. V." Near fine
