WALLACE, LEW (1827 - 1905) Union major general who saw action at Forts Henry and Donelson and was later criticized by Grant for his costly hesitancy at Shiloh. Wallace is also remembered as the author of Ben Hur. Autograph Letter Signed “Lewis Wallace, Maj. Gen.”, Lexington, KY., August 25, 1862, 1pp., light former folds else fine. Written to Stanton, in full, “ I beg leave to present the name of my young friend, Thomas H. Clay, of this city, for appointment to the staff. Mr. Clay is a grandson of Henry Clay. He has been serving me in the last few days as a volunteer aid; having been relieved by Maj. Gen. Nelson, he has now gone in the same capacity with Brig. Gen. Jackson. He is very competent and loyal. The government will lose nothing by having such names enlisted on its side in the struggle. His appointment and order to report to me for duty would be regarded as very great favor.” Also included a CDV size engraved image of Wallace.
