HUNTER, David (1802-1886), a Union general during the American Civil War. He achieved fame by his unauthorized 1862 order (immediately rescinded) emancipating slaves in three Southern states and as the president of the military commission trying the conspirators involved with the assassination of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln. Letter Signed “D. Hunter, Maj. Gen. Com.,” on “Head Quarters department of the South, Hilto Head” letterhead, July 26, 1862, to Hon. Edwin Stanton, 1pp. Fine. In part, I have the honor to aquaint you that owing to recent developments ... I have been led to regard as inexpedient my determination to send ten regiments of infantry to reinforce the Army of the Potomac. Seven regiments have been already sent; no more can be spared .....”
