A good war-date printed Northern penny song sheet, ca., 1862, 1p. 8vo., entitled: "Monitor and the Merrimac" and emblazoned with a black flag showing a skull and cross bones and reading, "J. D. His Marque" published by Johnson, song publisher, stationer & printer, Philadelphia, reading, in part: "…the Monitor went smack up to the Merrimac…Jeff Davis, how are you? Our Monitor beat your Merrimac quite handy, O! Erricson he's around; in the world, there cant be found a people like the Yankee Doodle Dandy…'twas on the eight of March, the Merrimac slipped out…she went rushing around, smashing everything she found…till the Monitor she come…let us cheer the men…that worked that little battery so handy…".
