Partially printed, 5-1/2” x 8-1/2,” on letterhead “U.S. Military Telegraph” April 26, 1862, 1pp., to Dr. Hewitt and issued under the authority of Maj. Gen’l Halleck. In part, “Gen. Smith’s remains will be transferred to St. Louis, placed in a metalic & buried there with military honors and left subject to orders of his family. You will make all necessary arrangements for the removal ... a steamer will be sent from here today.” General Charles Ferguson Smith (1807-1862) was a career United States Army officer who served in the Mexican-American War and as a Union General in the American Civil War. Smith died of an infection following his foot injury and chronic dysentery at Savannah, Tennessee.
