Reverse of case with multi-style 7 line inscription: "PRESENTED TO JOHN GIBBS. C.S.N. June 1861 by The Citizens of St. Andres, S. Car." outer border of scroll designs. Front of case with matching scroll border and a central design of Civil War infantry officer, sword upraised, holding a flag (of neutral / general design). Both sides show considerable wear but designs and inscriptions clear. White enameled face and inner case marked: "M. F. Tobias / Liverpool." Small chip on outer edge of face. Early "key-wound" style; the works seem to be mechanically in order. Just the lid on the inner case appears to be silver plated over brass; outer case does appear silver. Lacks round swivel at the top. Shows wear and use; rare with this CONFEDERATE STATES NAVY inscription, worthy of historical research.
