Rare war-date Union engineer's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written, "Battalion of U. S. Engineer Troops" stationery, by Pvt. Jerome Bottomly, Co. C, U. S. Engineers, "Camp at Jone's Corner, [Md.], July 13, 1863", in part: "We left Westminster on the 6th of this month. I passed the 4th in camp there. An old farmer's wife sent some doughnuts into camp for the men that were on picket…I eat four of them…we marched to Union bridge the first day about 13 miles. The next day we marched to Frederic City…next forenoon the 6th and 11th Corps passed and I saw John Knight. [Pvt. John L. Knight, Co. F, 10th Mass. transferred 37th Mass. WIA Winchester, 9/19/64]. He was in the last fight [Gettysburg]…at South Mt. pass and slept where I slept within two rods of the spot where I slept last year…camped in the woods near Antietam creek…went to the creek where we worked all day building a bridge…we expect every day there will be a battle…Lee would be glad to get away…Crosley was sent back to Washington with the boat train two weeks ago…Jerome. Afternoon. The rebs are all gone. Our troops were advancing in line of battle while I was writing this…and stopped writing to look at them…Vice President Hamlin just rode past. He knows some of the men in Co. B. I saw him shake hands with one and heard him say "How are you/ Major twenty pounds heavier than when I saw you last. Glad to see you. Glad to see you." I would not have thought him to be vice president…I hate to go into Virginia again, Most of the army is ragged and barefoot…good bye, Jerome." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. A bit light, else VG.
