Rare war-date Union engineer's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Jerome Bottomly, Co. C, U. S. Engineers, "Near Centreville, Va., Oct. 16, 63", in part: "…I wrote last from Culpepper. We left there last Saturday and marched to our old camp at Rappahannock Station…the march was pretty hard…we were the first of the army to come back…the army came across the river. Monday the army went on the other side of the river again…all the army but one corps went back. There was some skirmishing in the afternoon…Tuesday morning about two o'clock we were woke up and D company took up a pontoon bridge. B company cut up the plank on the railroad bridge and fixed it ready to be set on fire. About daylight A & C went to the railroad bridge and crossed. We loaded our pieces and waited for Co. B to set fire to the bridge when we came back double quick…after the torpedoes that were in the bridge…burst we went to camp and got some breakfast…that night we camped at Catlett's station…there was fighting yesterday…the troops have been in line of battle for two…days…I have some pictures of…the generals that I…think the most of. The one of McPherson is quite good. I think father will recognize him. Burnside's could not be better…when I write again it [is] hard to say perhaps Maryland…Jerome."
