Rare war-date Union engineer's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Jerome Bottomly, Co. C, U. S. Engineers, "Before Petersburg, Va., Aug. 22, 1864," in part: "…there is considerable shelling every day and night, but that is an old story now and it does no good or harm. There has been some fighting yesterday it was on the left and…we got the best of it. There was three or four hundred prisoners came in to Hd. Quarters…and they acknowledged they were whipped…last Thursday there was one of the Batt. wounded The first one this summer. He lost a leg that night I was out to the same place…and from one till three o'clock the air was just "chuck full" of cast iron mortar shells-spherical case, conical shells-and there was plenty of minnies all night, but with all the noise there was no one hurt near me. I was laying some platforms for mortars. Most of the army has gone away from here to the left. There is only one line in front now and…the rebs have all gone towards the rail road…at the time of the explosion at City Point I was here in my tent. I thought at first the rebs had sprung a mine under some of our works, but as there was no firing after I concluded it was a caisson or magazine. It made a great deal more noise than the Mine did on the 30th of July…Martha wrote her weight so I got weighed-135- that my fighting weight…Jerome." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Overall VG to near fine.
