War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Norman J. Ray, Co. A, 33rd Mass. Vols., Camp near Stafford C. H., Va., May 17, 1863, in part: "…what I can write about the battle would be of little account…for the Corps teams did not go…we could hear all of the firing…it was tiresome staying there with those teams…and hearing all the rumors…part of the time that we were half way to Richmond and…that we were driven back this side of the Rappahannock…we are back to the old camp again and why we came back here is more than I can tell after reading the papers and all of the official reports…the greatest trouble…seems to have been…that we were fighting on ground that we knew nothing about…Genl. Stoneman done one great thing, his raid was one of the smartest that has been made since the war begun that beats the Rebel Genl. Stuart in any of his certain [circuits] but here we are…there is no doubt but that Stonewall Jackson is dead. This time sure enough. One the less to contend with if he is. There is a good many of our to year and nine month men gone home from the Army of the Potomac so you see our numbers are growing smaller. We may hear of that draft before long…Sigel has not taken his old command yet but there is talk of it. We are still under the command of Gen. Howard the papers say that the 11th Corps run and I suppose they did…thank heaven our brigade was doing guard duty at that time…from your bro, Norman." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG.
