TRUMAN, Seymour (1824-1891) a career soldier and an accomplished painter. He served in the Union Army during the American Civil War, rising to the rank of major general. He was present at the Battle of Fort Sumter. He commanded the Union troops at the Battle of Olustee, the largest Civil War battle fought in Florida. Autograph Letter Signed “T. Seymour, Brig Genl”, written to Colonel Good, on Headquarters Department of the South, Hilton Head’ letterhead, February 13, 1863, 1pp., VG. In part, “You will send to some convenient point, from which the piles can be most readily put on vessels, as large a detachment as can be employed in cutting piles and completing them for shipment to the Ossabaw sound. Eight hundred will be required, averaging 50 feet in length ....”
