U.S. Navy cutlass, 32" overall length; 26" blade, 1862, Ames Manufacturing Co., Chicopee, Massachusetts. This weapon was somewhat of an anachronism by the Civil War since firearms and artillery had long since relegated swordplay to oblivion. Its wooden grip is hidden by the distinctive brass guard associated with naval blades. A worn Ames marking and date are found on opposing sides of the ricasso. The leather and wire are missing from the grip and there are several small nicks on the blade. Excellent old toned metal throughout. VG condition.
