TRUMAN, Seymour (1824-1891) a career soldier and an accomplished painter. He served in the Union Army during the American Civil War, rising to the rank of major general. He was present at the Battle of Fort Sumter. He commanded the Union troops at the Battle of Olustee, the largest Civil War battle fought in Florida. Autograph Letter Signed “T. Seymour”, August 10, 1863, to General Cullum, 4pp. In small part, “Permit me to call your attention to a point ... when I came North captured a valuable blockade-runner: the papers of this morning state that she was chased by a strange steamer on her return trip The Asago (sp?) make regular trips by Wilmington NC and some fine day the Asago will be lost to us - as she is armed with only field rifles. Both these vessels should have two 100 pnd Parrots ... Gillmore is trying to destroy Sumter from 3800 yards ...”
