SEWARD, William (1801-1872) Secretary of State (1861-1869) under Lincoln and Johnson, dissuaded Britain from recognizing the Confederacy or otherwise overtly aiding them. Letter Signed “William H. Seward” as Secretary of State, on “Department of State” letterhead, may 13, 1863, 3pp., minor margin staining, else VG. In part, “... be premature for this government to institute an inquiry concerning the transactions mentioned in the papers until it shall have received more definite information ... a general knowledge of the condition of public affairs existing at New Orleans ... I see no reason at present to believe that Mr. Allarcuard would be entitled to any modification of the orders ...”
