Union soldier’s letter written by “George Ireland” who enlisted into Company A, NY 140th Infantry, August 14, 1862; Fredericksburg, December 14, 1862, 4pp., with original cover. In part, “We could hear the the boom of the cannon roar. It continued thoughout the whole day. We arrived within a mile of Frederksburg between 8 and 9 am. .. it being so smoky that we could not see the city.... Our folks poured the shells into the city with such torrid that they set fire to the buildings near the river. There were two to three blocks burned. ... The inhabitants have all left the place .. the rebel troops are about 80 or 100 rods from the city. Our troops crost the river about 3 o’clock in the afternoon of the 11th. Some of the first that crost got badly injured ... Our Brigade .. crossed til Saturday evening and were marched towards the scene of action but fortunately .. did not go into action. ... The 128th were engaged and were badly cut up. It was constant fire of muskets 7 artillery. The rebels have all of the advantage ... Their sharp shooters lay behind a stone wall and our folks were in the oopen. it was a heavy fight. The dead lay scattered all over the firld .. one man lay close with his head shot off ...”
