War-date Union soldier's letter, 10pp. 8vo., written by Sgt. Gustavus B. Williams (signed Gustavus), Co. K, 51st Mass. Vols., Foster barracks, New Bern, N. C., Feb. 11, 1863, asking again for her to approach Gov. Andrew for his discharge, fears of Rebel attack and, in small part: "…we were to be removed to Baltimore to guard that city. Before this we heard we were to leave immediately for Texas to join Banks. All sorts of stories about the rebels being about to attack us…a man of Co. E has been discharged through Gov. Andrews interference…I wish that he (the Gov.) might be approached for me…John Collar of E…[and] one Kent of that Co. died on the march after twenty four hours sickness of congestive chills. Its disease now [that is] very prevalent in the regiment, some seven or eight deaths shaving occurred and a hundred or two on the sick list…which a soldier must dread rather than the Rebels…". VG
