War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Sgt. Gustavus B. Williams (signed Gustavus), Co. K, 51st Mass. Vols., Camp Foster, Newbern, N. C., March 1,1863, in part: "…a mail came last night brought me no letters only the Standard…I noticed most particularly entitled the "Soldiers Dream"-an address to his wife…and his confidence that he should see with them again. Her answer in the same style followed. No little thing has moved me more. The poem is true to the life. I will cut it out…I sen the conscription law…passed the Senate without opposition…it will be satisfactory to the people but doubt whether it will place many in the field…taking the power Governor's is a strong point therein. The classes favored are few another good feature -our men feel as though they prefer being here to standing such a draft at home…the order has been given to us…to go to Evan's Mills…[much here on the regiment's past exploits] the Pollksville march was stupidity and…apparently fruitless in results…we are as a regiment to separate…till our return…our drummers go to Beaufort where are the Col's headquarters…".
