War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Sgt. Gustavus B. Williams (signed G.), Co. K, 51st Mass. Vols., Evan's Mills, N. C., March 14,1863, in part: "…Lieut. Thayer is now Capt. of Co. I and their orderly Packard 2nd Lieutenant. Darling's death is great calamity and so felt by the company. every man was his friend and admirer. A model man…Newbern is threatened at last and the Rebels have attacked the city at three points or rather have commenced fighting our forces stationed outside the city. Artillery has been freely used for twenty four hours by both parties. The reports are heard plainly here. We are watching tonight fearing a column will approach and attack this place. We are prepared…but fighting is dreadful to anticipate. One thought fills my mind in view of the danger. My home, my wife and children. I feel as if you could not spare me…the dread of this may make me a coward but I shall try to do my duty and trust in our Father's protection…". VG
