War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Coleman Tilden, Co. H, 43rd Mass. Vols., Baltimore, July 4, 1863, to his parents, in part: "…we arrived yesterday afternoon and were taken to the rooms of the Union Relief Association where we were provided with food and quarters . This forenoon we took up our march for the outskirts of the city and…are in a splendid place. Baltimore is a handsome city…you know the rebels are in Pennsylvania and as the 8th, 46th, 51st and our own regiment are here…they may keep us in case the rebels should come down here. The Pennsylvania papers today say we have volunteered to stay…if you see any such reports, do not believe them. We have not volunteered and shall not, but will go home as quick as we cam…this is the 4th of July…they don't celebrate the day here…almost every house displays an American flag, but most of the inmates are Secesh at heart…when we landed here…we were…ver much disappointed when we heard that we were to stay. The boys were pretty noisy last night but are still today…I hope they will send us right home, but if it should depend on the fights now going on in Pennsylvania the sooner they end for our side the better for us…yours, Coleman." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG.
