Union soldier’s letter written by “W(illia)m A. Smith” who enlisted into Company D, PA 116th infantry. The 3 page letter, with original cover, is written from Headquarters 1st div, 2nd Corp, December 13, 1863. In part, “... Dec 5th we started on the march again and marched to Stevensburg in Culpepper County ...and expected to have a little brush with the Rebs there for they undertook to come across the river near there but they skedaddled back again. ... Dec. 8th we commenced to build a log house ... we just got a big fireplace in it. ...”
