Union soldier’s letter written by “W(illia)m A. Smith” who enlisted into Company D, PA 116th infantry. The 4 page letter, with original cover, is written from Mountain Creek, Headquarters 1st div, 2nd Corp, November 22, 1863. In part, “I have fixed up a corn crib with my partner and have a ten plate stove in it. It makes very good quarters for us. My partner’s name is John green. he is bully fellow to be with. we have a heavy business going on now. We make bone rings for the boys and other things to pass the time at 50cts a piece. ... Well there is to be another man shot for desertion next Friday. he is out of the 61st NYV. ...”
