GORDON, George Henry (1823-1886) was an American lawyer and a Union general ; Gordon organized and became colonel of the 2nd Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, served under Maj. Gen. Nathaniel P. Banks, unsuccessfully opposing Maj. Gen. Stonewall Jackson in the Shenandoah Valley; was appointed a brigadier general of volunteers on June 12, 1862, to rank from June 9, 1862; commanded a brigade in XII Corps, Army of the Potomac, at the Battle of Antietam, becoming acting division commander when Brig. Gen. Alpheus S. Williams became acting corps commander; took command of 1st Division, XI Corps, following the Battle of Gettysburg and was transferred with it to the Department of the South. There he commanded troops on Folly Island, South Carolina. Autograph Letter Signed, “Geo H. Gordan, Brig. Gen’l Comdg. Folly Island,”Folly Island August 26, 1864, written to US Senator (Massachusetts) Henry Wilson, 2pp., VG. In part, “Can you not make inquiry into military matters in this Dept. one of enormous cost and no return - more than half a million a day ... Since May 1864 we have simply gained Morris Island, a sandy tract four miles long a few hundred yards wide ... Gilmore’s operations have not rendered the taking of Charleston ... Sumter is stronger than ever ... Gilmore’s work has cost the Govt. more than one hundred and twenty million ... Let colored troops garrison such points as desirable to hold ... send from here twenty thousand good white troops to Grant or Meade ....”
