Soldier’s letter 4pp., with original cover, February 3, 1864, camp near Warrenton, signed only “Deak”. Writing his friend George Mitchell of Erie Penna, Deak advises “...perhaps we have not had quite so many killed for we have did the most of our fighting Indian style behind stumps and trees every man on his own hook. ... one of our new recruits in the 1st Ma. killed himself accidently ... a recruit in the 1st Pa, shot a bushwacker that was trying to capture him on picket ... he shot one of the devils and thought he could get the other. ..The people here as well as all the prisoners or deserters we get are in favor of McClellan being our next President. ... I see there is a call for 200,000 more men. Another chance for you ....”
