A good war-date Union officer's letter written, 3pp. 8vo., on "Headquarters Twentieth Corps, Office Chief of Artillery" stationery by Lt. William H. Mickle [WIA Gettysburg, 7/01/63],134th New York (as staff officer to the chief of artillery 20th Corps), "around Atlanta, Ga., July 28, 1864," in part: "…I am saddened very deeply because our beloved hero Genl. Hooker has been relieved from our corps & has gone to Washington. He was envied by some of these generals…& has suffered shameful abuse from those whom he has done all in his power to assist…General Sherman insulted him several times without the slightest provocation in the presence of all our staff & others…yesterday he added insult to injury which Genl. Hooker could stand no longer [and] consequently asked to be relieved if he couldn't be treated with decent consideration. He left us today & our hearts are almost broken. He is not only superior as a gallant officer but humane & treats every one with…courtesy. I called on him late last night & he gave me his Phot…& wrote his own autograph upon it. The hieroglyphics under his name are Maj. Genl. He told me all about his troubles with Genl. Sherman & I think he has been basely treated. He has the love & sympathy of nearly every officer & man of the army, but [not of] Sherman & his "clique"…Genl. Williams is now in command of our corps & is a noble fellow, highly regarded by the men, but no one can fill "Fighting Joe's" place. This afternoon the enemy attacked Genl. Howard on our right but was finely repulsed…they will evacuate Atlanta to night or tomorrow…as we have crowded up so closely around the town that their RR is endangered…the loss of the enemy in the fights of the 20th & 22d was about 20,000!! They cannot stand many more such charges…Maj. [Thomas Ward] Osborn is back…but limps considerably. He walks with a cane…William." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG
