War-date Union officer's letter, 4pp. 4to., written by Lt. William H. Mickle [WIA Gettysburg, 7/01/63], 134th New York (as staff officer to the chief of artillery 20th Corps), "Head Quarters Arty. Brig., 20th A. C., Savannah, Georgia, Jan. 12, 1865," in part: "…we have been in communication without he fleet for more than a month & instead of their having things in readiness for us when we should strike the coast (for the War Dept was fully advised as to where we would come out.) all this time has been…consumed & we are not half supplied…our animals had little or no forage and now they are in a sad condition…when we reached this point our transportation was in fine condition & had the Quartermasters Dept. attended to its business & fed them…today we might have been marching through S. Ca…but we are getting a full supply now…if the supplies had been here when we first came it would have been as well to have gone immediately into S. Ca. & followed up victory after victory until the accursed Rebellion is forever "wiped out" Genl. Sherman will move when he thinks better whether we are supplied or not& depend upon the country for stores…Genl. Barry, chief of Arty. Mil. Div. Miss. reviewed our batteries today & pronounced them in fine condition except the horses which we are not blamed for…Kilpatrick's cavalry were also reviewed by Genl. Sherman & E. M. Stanton, Secretary of War. Several of the nobility from Washington are here & Simon Draper from N. Y. as Govt. agent to ship cotton. Uncle Sam will secure many millions of dollars from the proceeds of the cotton found here…I received another fine testimonial from Genl. Ward, comdg the 3d Div. of our Corps and tomorrow Genl. Geary comdg. the 2d Div. will send me another. How I shall prize them in the future, if spared…as guaranties of my own personal character as an officer & man…by those high in position…(Copy testimonial kindly given by Brig. Genl. Ward)…Chevers House, South Carolina, Jan. 9, 1865. Lieut. Mickle…it gives me pleasure to acknowledge your gentlemanly bearing while personally conveying orders during my connection with the 20th Corps…I can also testify from personal observation and…repeated remarks of my staff officers of your good moral character unsullied by the evil influences incident to military life and…cheerfully recommending you to a more elevated position in either a civil or military capacity…you friend, W. T. Ward, Brig. Genl. Comdg Division…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Overall VG to near fine.
