War-date Union officer's letter, 4pp. 4to., written, on "Head-Quarters Artillery Brigade, 20th Army Corps" stationery, by Lt. William H. Mickle [WIA Gettysburg, 7/01/63], 134th New York (as staff officer to the chief of artillery 20th Corps), "Savannah, Ga., Jan. 24, 1865," in part: "…I returned to the city from Genl. Ward's Head Quarters…we started our campaign & then were obliged to retrace our steps, but man…who contends against the elements is like the fool who beats the air. The storm has subsided now & very soon will resume the movement already begun. I went from Hardeeville to Purrysburg on the Savannah whence I took boat for the city about 30 miles below. when we got about half way as the steamer was passing through some obstructions the wind caught her astern so as to throw the boat around heavily on some plies crushing one of her wheels & thoroughly disabling her…we floated down with the tide…when the wind blew us against the left bank where she remained hard aground…four officer & one man to row started for Savannah in a little boat where we arrived in safety about 7 p. m…[coming home] will depend much on circumstances at the close of this campaign…but if the General issues an order similar to the one he issued at the close of last campaign no one can get away unless they are disabled…William". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Overall VG to near fine.
