War-date Union officer's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Lt. William H. Mickle [WIA Gettysburg, 7/01/63], 134th New York (as staff officer to the chief of artillery 20th Corps), "Savannah, Ga., Feb. 1, 1865," in part: "…we are between 40 & 50 miles from…Savannah…toward Augusta & intend striking through this little state soon & march as rapidly as practicable. Sherman is now at Pocotaligo near Beaufort with Genl. Howard's part of the army while our left wing is here. The Rebels planted torpedoes in the road near Sister's ferry & a few have been injured…but Genl. Slocum declares that for every torpedo he will burn 100 houses in S. Ca. It seems hard retaliation but if they will have war we will give them the better end of it. Already we find our old style of living as on last campaign & it does seem fine…there has been a great freshet in the Savannah that has retarded our movement greatly, but now most of the obstacles are overcome & we will soon "light out"…to add…the finishing stroke to the Rebellion. Our health is excellent & the morale of the army never better…Geo. Judd is now orderly at Genl. Geary's Hd. Qrs…we shall be farther north & somewhere near Charleston or Wilmington-maybe at Augusta or Columbia. Wherever we go we hope to rely on the God of battles & win sure & glorious victory…William." An original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG
