Brass bell, 5 1/2" x 9", ca. 1860's. Looking like a massive cow bell, one side of this heavy item is pasted with the following typed note: "Bell of the U.S.S. Daffodil, a gunboat tender, from which General Sherman wrote first account of his great march through Georgia. With signal flags, the Daffodil asked: 'How long before you take Fort McAllister?' - Sherman, who had 60,000 men, replied: 'About ten minutes'. He did so, then went aboard the Daffodil and sent his first dispatches to Washington and the outside world. He had been cut off from all communications for more than a month.". Relevant 19th century news accounts are pasted on the bell's interior. VG condition.
