War-date Union officer's letter, 4pp. 4to., written by Lt. William H. Mickle [WIA Gettysburg, 7/01/63], 134th New York (as staff officer to the chief of artillery 20th Corps), "Head Quarters. Army of Georgia, Goldsboro, N. C., Apr. 7, 1865," in part: "…it found me well & in the usual routine of duty, but especially active as we are to have a review of the Artillery at 4 P. M….by Maj. Genl. Mower, commanding 20th Corps…reviews have been the chief topic of conversation and the respective Corps, Divisions & Brigades vied with each other to make…the better appearance…the 20th Corps can take the palm on reviews in preference to any of those in Sherman's army and our artillery brigade has been pronounced by Sherman & his subordinate Genls as the finest in the army…while one of the Div's were being reviewed yesterday a dispatch came to Genl. Sherman stating that Grant had taken Richmond-25,000 prisoners, 500 pieces of artillery & A. P. Hill-Rebel Genl. reported killed. It would be useless for me to attempt a description of the enthusiasm that…took hold the troops as they…sent u prolonged cheers for Grant & his noble men. Along the entire line of…war-worn veterans all was joy and cheer after cheer rent the air…at first I put no confidence in the report…but when Genl. Sherman announced it officially I was happy…Grant will pursue Lee with all possible haste &…entirely destroy or capture his army…if Lee escapes Grant with a part of his army…to join Johnston…we may move immediately, but if Grant attends to Mr. Lee & gobble his army…we may remain here for some time…if Grant's victory is equal to reports the Confederacy is…"gone up" & our campaigning…will not be so hard…the Johnies will be broken into small bands or…compelled to surrender. The news is indeed most cheering & we have great cause for rejoicing……William…Maj. Reynolds is well. Maj. Osborn & Lt. Freeman also…W. H. M." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG to near fine.
