War-date Union officer's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written, on "Head Quarters Army of Georgia, Office Chief of Artillery" stationery, by Lt. William H. Mickle [WIA Gettysburg, 7/01/63], 134th New York (as staff officer to the chief of artillery 20th Corps), Raleigh, N. C., Apr. 28, 1865, to his wife, in part: "…the war in this part of our loved country has virtually ceased. Joe Johnston surrendered his entire army east of the Chattahoochie river to Genl. Sherman & now our old war-horse proposes to march us northward to Richmond & thence to Washington where…we shall be mustered out & disbanded…we don't intend to start from here till Monday May 1st…it will take us about fifteen days to reach Richmond where we will rest a short time & then proceed to Washington…we deem it reliable…we are accustomed to changes & disappointments …let us rejoice with fear & trembling while we endeavor to realize the glorious fact that the war is…finished…we shall be full of surprises as well as joy till reunited & can hardly believe the truth that peace with all its attendant blessings is smiling upon our beloved Nation. The poor people of the South hail the tidings with unbounded joy & nearly all are happy tab the thought of no more war…lovingly, William." An original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG to near fine.
