War-date Union officer's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written, on "Head Quarters Army of Georgia, Ass't. Quartermaster's Office" stationery, by Lt. William H. Mickle [WIA Gettysburg, 7/01/63], 134th New York (as staff officer to the chief of artillery 20th Corps), Richmond, Va., May 7, 1865, to his wife, in part: "…we arrived here this beautiful Sabbath…after marching about one week from Raleigh…Genl. Sherman gave us till the 15th [of May to get to Richmond]…& here it is the 7th…we shall probably start for Washington in a day or two & there…we shall be mustered out. We'll pray…for strength & grace to sustain us through…the ordeal…it is not a picnic to march so fast in the warm weather. I'm too tired now to write much…[May 8th, 1865]…well darling this letter ought to be sweet…as Major Reynolds just spilt a lot of white sugar all over it…today has been occupied principally in visiting the city & surroundings. The Capitol & yard are fine & the equestrian statue of Washington surrounded by the statues of Patrick Henry, Jno. Mason & Jefferson is most superb. I met Lieut. Rockwell of our Regt. [134th New York] captured at Gettysburg & is just retuning to the command. I saw LIbby Prison, Castle Thunder & other prominent places of Rebel crime & indignity. Much of the town was burned by the enemy when evacuated but in the respect looks well…the 10th inst we are to march through Richmond with our army enroute to Washington…William….one year ago today poor Geo. Payne was killed & many other patriots who mingled in the fray at Dug Gape near Dalton…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG to near fine.
