A rare war-date Union medical report document, 2pp. 4to., "Headquarters, 3rd Division, 15th A. C., Office of Surgeon in Chief, near Goldsboro, N. C., Mar. 31, 1865," issued by Surgeon in Chief Jonathan S. Prout (originally of the 26th Missouri) of the 3rd Division, 15th Corps' listing the condition of that division's medical staff. This document lists all surgeons and assistant surgeons available for duty including those in the regiments of the 4th Minnesota, 18th Wisconsin, 63rd Illinois, 10th Iowa and 80th Ohio. Following the individual listing of surgeons available is Prout's written memorandum, reading, in part: "…when the two surgeons and one assistant surgeon, who are entitled to be, are mustered out, nine (9) vacancies…I have been told that it is proposed to recommend Assistant Surgeon A. A. Lodge, 63rd Ill. for promotion. I seriously doubt whether such a promotion will be a proper one on account of his past intemperate habits although from all the evidence that I have received his deportment has been good for the last six months…J. S. Prout, Acting Staff Surg. U. S. A., Surgeon in Chief." VG
