Stamped brass badge, 1 3/4" x 2 1/4", ca. 1861-1865. The Philadelphia Fire Zouaves, officially the 72nd Pennsylvania Infantry, were raised in August, 1861 and commanded by Colonel DeWitt Clinton Baxter. Serving for three years, this hardy regiment of Philadelphia firemen fought through the Army of the Potomac's major engagements. This badge, probably for a hat, has an applied brass "E" denoting a company centered between P.F.Z. (Philadelphia Fire Zouaves) and P.S.M. (Pennsylvania State Militia). The attachment pin on the reverse is intact. Toned brass, VF condition.
