SHERMAN, William T.(1820-1891) Lieutenant General. Notorious for making Georgia groan. Led the famous "March to the Sea", and took Johnston's surrender in Durham station, N. C., on April 26, 1865. Autograph Letter Signed, “W.T. Sherman” 4pp., on “Headquarters Army of the United States” letterhead, Washington, DC., December 26, 1879, to Captain Thomas Wilhelm, VG. In part, “I was very much pleased to receive your ... Volume of .. Military and Naval Encyclopedia .. which is most valuable to the profession and does honor and credit to you ... I have tested the accuracy of the contents by many references .. and all agree that as a book of reference .. it is most valuable and should be at the elbow of every Army officer. ...”
