BROWNELL, Francis Edwin (1840–1894) was a soldier and recipient of the Medal of Honor for killing the murderer of Col. Elmer E. Ellsworth, colonel of the 11th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Brownell's actions marked the first action in the American Civil War to merit the award. Signed Album Page “Francis E. Brownwell, 1st Regt. N.Y. Zouaves, May 28, 1861”. Affixed to the page are CDV sized albumen photographs of both Ellsworth and Brownwell. VG. Fascinating in that Brownell signed this page 4 days after he killed James Jackson, thus avenging Ellsworth.
