CDV of General Edward Washburn Whitaker, backmarked Brady/Anthony, seated view. The contrast is strong, the image very fine and clean. Edward Washburn Whitaker, a resident of Ashford, Connecticut, enlisted as a 19-year old Sergeant in April of 1861. During the next four years he would advance to Lieutenant Colonel of the 1st Connecticut Cavalry and in March of 1865 was brevetted Brigadier General. He received the Medal of Honor for action on June 29th, 1864 at the Battle of Reams’ Station, Virginia, where he and 40 troopers of the 3rd New York Cavalry started “A RIDE TO ALMOST CERTAIN DEATH”.
