The image has been hand-tinted.The identification has been cut7pasted to the fron, “Rebel Soldier killed in the trenches of Fort Hell. This view was taken the morning after the storming of Petersburgh, Va., April 2nd.” On the reverse, No 3184, ... Published by Anthony & Co.” According to a New York soldier, Fort Sedgwick became known as Fort Hell because "it was nearer the rebel lines, and therefore was subjected to the hottest fire."
