Abraham Lincoln complies with a request for his autograph. Letter Signed, one page with integral leaf, Springfield, January 12, 1861: In full, "J. P. Scrymser Esq. Dear Sir Herewith I send you my autograph which you request. Yours truly A. Lincoln." The body of the letter is written in the hand of presidential secretary John Nicolay. Lincoln no doubt got hundreds of such requests which he obligingly fufilled with the help of his trusted assistant, all the while contemplating his response to the secession crisis.
