BIDDLE, James (1783-1848) was an American commodore. His flagship was USS Columbus. During the War of 1812, Biddle was first lieutenant in USS Wasp. He was in command of the sloop USS Hornet in 1815 when she defeated HMS Penguin. Autograph Letter Signed “J. Biddle” on Philadelphia, December 11, 1815 letter, 2pp., VG. In small part, “Knowing that the late war congress voted a medal to the Commanding Officers of many vessels that had a successful action with the Enemy, and they also voted in every instance of ... the capture and destroyed .... the action of the Hornet and Penguine ... the reward conferred by the National Legislature ... in every similar occasion ...If you concur with me in this opinion, will you .. suggest it to the Naval Committee? ” Of course there was a medal struck by special resolution of Congress commemorating the action between USS 'Hornet' and HMS 'Penguin', 1815.
