DOUGLAS, Stephen A. (1813-1861) served Illinois as Representative in Congress from 1843-1847 and U.S. Senator from 1847 until his death on June 3, 1861. He defeated Abraham Lincoln for the U.S. Senate in 1858 (Lincoln-Douglas debates) but was defeated by Lincoln for the presidency in 1860, receiving 12 electoral votes. Autograph Letter Signed, “S.A. Douglas” 1p. octavo, addressed to the President, and reads in part: “I have the honor to recommend the appointments in the New Regiments of the Army from Illinois the following persons Samuel Ashton to be captain. William A. Snyder to be captain. William J. Wyatt to be captain Doct. J.J. Simm to be Surgeon in the Army...” Probably Mexican War appointments. VG.
